Monkeys in Urban Area

Monkeys have been a part of the natural landscape for centuries, but as human development encroaches upon their habitat, they have become a growing nuisance in many urban areas. While monkeys can be cute and playful, they can also cause serious problems for humans living in close proximity to them.

          One of the most significant issues associated with monkeys is their tendency to cause damage to property. Monkeys are notorious for tearing up gardens and crops, raiding garbage cans and dumpsters, and causing damage to homes and buildings. They can  cause extensive damage to roofs, wiring, and plumbing systems, which can be expensive and time-consuming to repair.

In addition to property damage, monkeys can also be a health hazard to humans. They are known to carry a variety of diseases, including rabies, which can be transmitted to humans through bites or scratches. In many areas, monkeys are also known to be carriers of other diseases, such as tuberculosis and hepatitis, which can be transmitted through contact with their bodily fluids.  

Monkeys are also known to be aggressive towards humans, particularly when they feel threatened or provoked. They can be territorial and will often defend their territory aggressively. This can be a problem for people living in close proximity to monkeys, especially if they have small children or pets. Furthermore, monkeys have a natural curiosity and may be drawn to food and other items that humans have left out. This can lead to conflict between humans and monkeys, as they may attempt to steal food or other items, which can be dangerous for both parties.

In many areas, the problem of monkey nuisance has become so severe that authorities have taken steps to control their populations. This may involve relocation to other areas, or in extreme cases, culling. However, these measures are often controversial, and there is no easy solution to the problem.

In conclusion, while monkeys can be charming and entertaining animals, they can also be a significant nuisance for humans living in close proximity to them. Property damage, health hazards, aggression, and conflicts over food are all common problems associated with monkeys in human habitations. As human development continues to encroach upon their natural habitats, it is likely that this problem will only become more widespread in the future. It is essential for authorities and individuals to take steps to mitigate the problem and find solutions that are both effective and humane.

Cause :          

he man-animal conflict is mainly because of destruction and disturbances of wildlife habitats . The human settlements in and around forests is leading to displacement of animals from their habitat which directly affect the food availability of wild animals. As a result, the struggle of wild animals for food, water and space has expanded beyond forest areas. Decrease in natural vegetation/ water sources (springs and small streams), leading to grim and difficult summers that pushes wild animals into villages close to the dwindling forests. The forests where monkeys live are void of food, leaving the monkeys with no choice but to look for food in human-occupied areas.

 

         Solution : Creation of water reservoirs in the forest area and plantation of fruit trees in                                  forest area is one of the sustainable solution for human wildlife conflict.
