A cost effective solution To save life of wild animals and prevent them from forcing into human habitations

Necessity: Summer brings back water scarcity  in the state followed by human-wildlife conflict. With the onset of summer, India here again witnessing water deficit. It hits the state’s wildlife sanctuary causing death of animals and forcing them into human habitations, Water scarcity is forcing wild animals to stray into villages According to our past experience and study lots of wild animals have lost their lives due to water and food scarcity in the wildlife sanctuaries in the last five years. The situation is going to become critical in future. This is a matter of great concern as every summer comes up with the same problem. In order to end the sufferings of these wild animals, the state government should come up with a solution. So to save wild animals life and prevent them from forcing into human habitations it necessary to construct artificial water reservoir with advance technology. Or to convert existing earthen dams into the  storage tank by using cost effective technology.

Wild animals have lost their lives due to water and food scarcity in the wildlife sanctuaries, Also Human-animal conflict is likely to increase this summer. Wild animals, in search of water, enter villages near the forests and often get killed by villagers.

Conversion of Forest Earthen Dam into Storage Tank 

INTRODUCTION

Percolation Tank , Earthen Dam Are among the most common runoff harvesting structure in India,

 A percolation tank can be defined as an artificially created surface water body submerging highly permeable land area so that the surface runoff is made to percolate and recharge the ground water.

Percolation tanks should normally be constructed in a terrain with highly fractured and weathered rock for speedy recharge. Too high permeability may result in the percolated water escaping in the downstream as regenerated surface flow, hence it will defeat the purpose of water conservation. In order to prevent seepage losses through bunds and bottom, these are lined with HDPE film sheeting.

Most of the old earthen dams and percolation tanks are leaking to some extent and this is known as seepage. This is the result of water moving slowly through the embankment and/or percolating slowly through the dam's foundation. This is normal and usually not a problem with most earthen dams if measures are taken to control movement of water through and under the dam. If uncontrolled, seepage can progressively erode soil from the embankment or its foundation, resulting in failure of the dam. 

Objectives And Advantages

Demand for Conversion Scheme :- There is a demand from the Urban peoples and  rural farmers to convert the Earthen Dam into storage tank, So as to save life of wild animals and prevent them from forcing into human habitations, It is necessary to convert earthen dams into storage tank.

*To decrease the rate of infiltration through sandy and porous soil 

*To prevent damage to the bund of the Earthen Dam due to leakages 

*To increase Water storage capacity of the earthen dam for long duration 

*Ultimately to make available drinking water for the wild animals

*There is no need to acquire new forest land in any way to create new water body

Work: A) Cleaning of site and Removing of pitching stone   B) Excavation of positive trench and anchoring trench  C) laying and installation of HDPE film  D) refilling of trench with soft soil and stone pitching

HDPE film should cover area from bottom of the positive trench up to the top of the stone pitching
